NanoEngineering professor, Dr. Shirley Meng and colleagues have discovered the reason behind the failure of lithium metal batteries. UC San Diego researchers found that bits of lithium metal deposits are breaking off from the anode surface during discharging and being trapped where the battery can no longer access it. The technique used by the group to measure inactive lithium species was also momentous in that it was the first in the field of battery research. Study findings were published in Nature.
